Abstract

391,466. Furnace fronts. JOHNSON, J., Green Shutters, The Highway, Sutton, Surrey. Aug. 24, 1931, No. 23760. [Class 51 (i).] Comminuted fuel is burnt in a chamber 2 located within the air casing at the front of a boiler and having a portion 3 increasing in cross-sectional area from the end at which the fuel is introduced and a cylindrical portion connected to the boiler, sets of circularlyarranged air inlets being arranged at 13 closely adjacent the fuel inlet and at 4 .. 7 in the cylindrical portion, both sets being provided with independently operable controlling means which directly cover and uncover the inlets in the chamber wall. The inlets 4 .. 7 are controlled by ring shutters 8 .. 11 adjusted angularly or axially by handles 12. The ports 13 in the hemispherical end of the chamber are controlled by a hood 14 which may be solid and moved axially as shown, or ported and rotated. A few small openings 15 are formed in the hood to facilitate the flow of air to the ports 13. The open end of each chamber is formed as a hexagonal flange 2a so that when a number of chambers are provided on the furnace front the flanges fit together in a frame 22, Fig. 3, to form a continuous refractory wall.
