Abstract

653,786. Liquid fuel burners. BROWN, T. T., and SWINNEY BROS., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1948, No. 26282. [Class 75(i)] [Also in Group XII] The cylindrical body 1, Fig. 1, of a furnace front has a circular row of uniformly spaced ports 2 controlled by a rotary ported damper 4 and is associated with an air director 15 in which terminates a burner tube 30 of which the end is surrounded by an outwardly flaring truncated cone 37 in which is located a coaxial oppositely convergent truncated cone 39. Inclined vanes 38 are provided on the outside of the cone 37, and inclined vanes 40 are provided on the inside of both cones or on the inside of the cone 39 only. Air passing through holes or slots 41 on opposite sides of the annular zone of connection between the two cones 37, 39 is directed by the vanes 38, 40 to produce a swirling flow which reduces deposition of carbon or soot on the burner parts in the flame zone. The cones 37, 39 are slidably mounted on a tube 29, surrounding the burner tube 30, and are adjustable by a pair of rods (not shown), operated by handles outside the body 1. The tube 29 is provided with a circumferential row of air ports 31 controlled by a sliding cylindrical shutter 32 operated by a rod 33 passing through plates 23, 27. The plate 27 is secured to the end of the tube 29 and is bolted to the plate 23, which closes an opening 19 in and is bolted to a plate 16 hinged and bolted to a flange 9 of the outer end of the body 1. The opening 19 is sufficiently large to permit the insertion or removal of the burner assembly therethrough. The plate 16 is provided with two other apertures 17", 18, closed by hinged doors 19<SP>1</SP>, 20, and provided with inspection and lighting holes 44, 45 normally closed by pivoted plates 46, 47. When forced draught is employed a casing 43 supplied with air under pressure is secured to the flange 9. When natural draught is employed the casing 43 is omitted and the doors 19<SP>1</SP>, 20 are maintained open. A modified construction is described for use in small furnaces, etc., in which the double cone structure is secured direct to the end plate of the furnace front, and the outer cone has an outwardly directed flange whilst the inner cone has an inwardly directed flange.
