Abstract
652,665. Oil burners. WATTS, A. E. June 25, 1948, No. 17115. [Class 75(i)] An oil burner blast tube comprises a tubular chamber the forward end of which carries an outwardly conical refractory member and encloses a fuel supply nozzle, ignition means, and a plurality of inwardly .projecting vanes to whirl the air and fuel on passage through the tube. a plurality of holes being formed in the said forward end of the chamber to open into the annular V-shaped space formed therebetween and the adjacent portion of the refractory member. Fig. 2 shows a cylindrical blast tube 19 of an oil burner having fitted at its end an air cone formed of two parts 13, 14 which interfit to provide flush inner and outer surfaces, an outwardly divergent refractory cone 17 being arranged over the air cone 13, 14. The inner cone-part 13 has a plurality of arcuate vanes 16 extending radially inwardly, with their rear edges curved to reduce air resistance, so that the air blast is caused to rotate after passing therethrough. The outer cone part 14 has an inwardly directed conical mouth which has a series of holes 15 arranged therearound to allow part of the rotating air blast to escape on to the sides of the refractory cone 17 and prevent the formation of any vacuum causing flame pulsation. The refractory cone may have plain outwardly divergent sides or its mouth may have a slight inward deflection, as shown, to produce a more concentrated flame. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement wherein the refractory cone is formed by a fire brick 25 having a moulded cone portion 26, the fire brick 25 forming part of a furnace wall. In a further arrangement the cylindrical mouth of the blast tube 19 is formed with the vanes 16 and holes 15, the two-part cone 13, 14 being omitted and the refractory cone 17 being fitted directly over the end of the blast tube.
