Abstract

256,685. Mond, A. L., (Peabody, E. H.). May 12, 1925. Pulverulent - fuel burners.-A mixture of pulverulent fuel and air or other gas is forced into a rotating bodv of air or other comburent gas from the outside at an angle to the axial direction of flow of the air to the furnace. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the mixture of fuel and air is supplied by a pipe 17 tangsntially to a chamber formed between a member 5 secured to a plate on the furnace wall 2 and a member 10 bolted to the member 5. The mixture issues from this chamber between the edge 13 of the member 10 and the rim 6 of the member 5 into the body of air flowing under natural or forced draught through an air register 25 to the furnace opening 4. The air register is fitted with hinged doors 26 adapted to communicate a rotary motion to the air. The inner and outer walls 12, 20 of the mixture chamber may be shaped so as to almost meet at one point 21. Adjustable guide vanes 49 may be arranged in the mixture chamber. The front plate 27 of the air register carries a pipe 41 fitted with a yoke coupling for supporting a liquid-fuel burner 44 which may be ignited through an inspection opening normally covered by a plate 46. The inner end of the pipe 41 carries a diffuser 42. The liquid-fuel burner may be used instead of or together with the pulverulent-fuel burner.
