Abstract
807,984. Pulverized fuel burners. BAB.. COCK & WILCOX Ltd. June 3, 1957 [June 5, 1956], No. 17608/57. Class 75(1) In a burner having a primary air and pulverized fuel inlet duct 17 directed tangentially to a curved peripheral wall 21 of an inlet chamber 16 and a discharge nozzle 11 connected to the chamber at an aperture 26 formed in a side wall 23 there of, a plurality of deflector plates 46 provide an interrupted circular inner wall closely circumscribing the aperture 26 in the side wall 23 and adapted to deflect portions of the air and fuel stream towards different peripheral parts of the aperture 26. Each deflector plate 46 is concave towards the aperture 26 and its downstream end is secured to a pin 47 pivotally mounted in the side walls of the chamber radially inwardly from the free end 52 of the adjacent plates. The end of each plate first contacted by the fuel is farther from the aperture 26 than the end last contacted. Each plate is adjusted by a rod 53 which is pivoted to the convex surface of the plate and projects through the curved peripheral wall 21 of the chamber. The rod 53 can be clamped by nuts to a support 55 welded to the outside of the curved peripheral wall 21. The latter is in the form of a volute and the distance between it and the aperture 26 in the side wall 23 gradually decreases from the inlet duct 17 to the cut-off point 27. The discharge nozzle 11 is frusto-conical and extends through an adjustable air register, comprising pivoted louvers, to a burner port in a furnace wall. A tube 57 extends axially through the inlet chamber 16 and the frusto-conical nozzle 11 and defines with the nozzle an annular passage of diminishing cross-section for the fuel and air. A liquid fuel atomizing burner may be inserted in the tube 57. A gas burner in the form of a ring discharging radilally inwardly may be mounted at the burner port. A view port having a glass insert 45 is mounted on the outer wall of the air supply housing. The inlet duct 17 is of rectangular section and may be positioned at an angle to the axis of the burner.
