Abstract
735,409. Burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 11, 1953 [Sept. 12, 1952], No. 25168/53. Class 75 (1). In burner means adapted to burn two different fuels alternately or simultaneously a central fluent fuel burner 20 discharges through a burner port 25 in a furnace wall and a further burner 10 arranged to burn a different, gaseous fuel has a plurality of elongated conduits 55 connected at their outer ends to a gas distributer 50 and comprising parallel parts which extend through an air space 27 and terminate adjacent the port 25 .in discharge tips 60 distributed around the central burner 20. The conduits 55 are of equal length and are arranged at equiangular spacing on a circle surrounding the central burner 20. They extend through glands 56 in a circular closure plate 37 in a casing 24 spaced from the furnace wall and are bent outwardly at their outer ends for flanged connection with nipples 53 extending radially inwardly from the distributer 50 which is annular. They are supported intermediate their lengths by guides 57 secured to a cylindrical casing 36 surrounding the burners and extending inwardly from the periphery of the closure plate 37 to the outer wall 33 of an air register supplying air to the burner port 25 through the air space 27. Each discharge tip 60, Fig. 6, is disposed entirely within the peripheral outline of its conduit, is made of a corrosion resistant alloy and comprises two side faces 61 equally inclined to and intersecting in, an axial plane of its conduit, two end faces 63 equally inclined to, and intersecting in, the axial plane perpendicular to the first axial plane and a central face 62 perpendicular to the conduit axis. Each side face 61 has a plurality of discharge orifices, and each end face 63 and the central face 62 has a single discharge orifice; in operative position each conduit is arranged so that its first axial plane passes through the axis of the burner port 25. The central burner 20 comprises a liquid fuel atomizing head 44 and a supply pipe 43 extending through a distancepiece 41 extending through the centre of the closure plate 37. A conical impeller 45 with air whirling plates 46 is mounted on the end of the distance piece and the base of the impeller is disposed inwardly of the gas discharge tips 60.
