Abstract

1,250,560. Burners. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 25 Nov., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 57617/69. Heading F4T. A swirl-type muffle burner comprises a burner lance 4 for supplying liquid or gaseous fuel surrounded by at least two concentric annular supply ducts 40, 50 each including swirl means 11, 12 and an adjacent refractory muffle 18, the construction being such that the velocity of the air leaving the innermost duct is greater than the velocity leaving the outermost duct. The two annular ducts 40, 50 may be separated by tabular member 9 which is biased at its inlet end. The rate of flow through the outermost duct 40 may be varied by changing its inlet cross-section by adjusting a sleeve 15. The crosssectional areas of the duct exits are preferably equal, the outer diameter of the outermost duct is between 0À3 and 0À6 times the internal diameter of the muffle and the length of the muffle between 0À5 and 2À0 times the internal diameter of the muffle. The swirl means 11, 12 are arranged to give the same direction of twist to the air emerging from each duct.
