Abstract

1282070 Swirl-type burner SULZER BROS Ltd 26 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 17257/71 Addition to 1250560 Heading F4T A swirl-type muffle burner 1 comprises a burner lance 4 for supplying fluid fuel surrounded concentrically by at least two annular air supply ducts 40, 50 each containing swirl means 11, 12 for imparting twist to the air flowing therethrough into an adjacent refractory muffle 18, the construction being such that the velocity of air leaving the innermost duct is always greater than the velocity of air leaving the outermost duct, and further includes means for adjustably changing the direction of flow of the air flowing to at least one of the twist imparting means. The direction changing means removes resonant noise and as shown comprises vanes 162, distributed around the periphery of the inlet of outer duct 40, mounted on spindle 161 and adjustable by lever mechanism 166, 165, 164. The maximum change of flow direction produced is such that the change in magnitude of the tangential velocity component at the outlet of the twist imparting means is less than 10% . Air flow rate is variable by axial displacement of sleeve 15 via linkage 116.
