Abstract

1,137,985. Burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 9 June, 1966 [9 June, 1965], No. 25792/66. Heading F4T. A gaseous fuel burner 10 for a steam generator and firing through a circular port 11 in a water-cooled chamber wall 12 has a front wall 14 spaced from wall 12 to form a windbox 15 to which superatmospheric air is supplied, the walls of port 11 connecting with the annular front plate 22 of a cylindrical air register 20 supported coaxially in windbox 15. The register 20 includes blades or vanes 23 pivotally mounted to be rotatable about their axes which are parallel to the central axis of port 11. A fixed tubular sleeve 30 axially arranged with respect to port 11 terminates within the register and has slidably mounted within it a tubular distance-piece 31 carrying a vaned impeller or diffuser cone 32 which disrupts the airflow stream so as to form a shielded turbulent air zone on its downstream side. An oil atomizer assembly 50 is housed within the tube 30 so that the atomizer tip 51 terminates adjacent impeller 32. Disposed within windbox 15 is a torusshaped gaseous fuel manifold 40 connected to spud elements 42 having chisel-faced tips and a sighting tube 18 provides means for visual monitoring. Each spud element 42 has a collar or shielding plate 45 which produces a shielded turbulent air zone on the downstream side thereof. As the gas burner load is decreased smaller proportions of fuel are projected into the zone downstream of impeller 32 and the primary location of ignition stability is transferred to the spud collar zones. When firing gas alone, the impeller 32 is positioned slightly upstream of the spud collars but when firing oil and gas in combination the impeller is heated downstream of the spud tips. The oil burner may be replaced by a further gas spud or a pulverized solid fuel burner.
