Abstract

403,819. Boiler &c. furnaces. VANDEVELDE, A., 25, Avenue Jacques Sermon, Brussels. Jan. 20, 1933, No. 1984. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1932. [Class 51 (i).] Air, supplying ; fire-bars ; stoking.-In a furnace, particularly for central heating apparatus and domestic use, small coal is fed continuously to an open-topped trough having inclined side walls 15 and an imperforate bottom 24, primary air for combustion being supplied under pressure from water-cooled nozzles or passages 8, 9 in the side walls which direct the air downwardly. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the fuel is fed from an external hopper by a distributing nozzle 17 with a control valve 18‹ to a trough of convergent-divergent section, the hollow walls of which are connected to the water space of the boiler. Air from a blower 12 is supplied to chambers 5 formed between the trough and boiler walls, and is delivered to the fuel by one or more rows of inclined nozzles 8, 9 passing through the walls of the trough. Additional air-supply nozzles may be provided above the fuel bed. A thermostat 20 switches the fan motor in or out at predetermined temperatures. To remove slag, a plate with a toothed front edge is pushed into the fuel on the upper of two sets of guides 16, the slag above it being then either removed through a side opening or pushed into a space at the rear of the fuel bed and dumped by drawing the plate 24 forward on the lower set of guides. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of fuel trough, the air chambers 5 being arranged inside the waterspaces, and the walls of the fuel-space being stepped to provide the guides for the bottom plate 24 and the upper slag-removing plate. The fuel trough &c., may be formed as a separate structure for insertion in an existing firebox.
