"To all whom z't may coacem: V f -Be'it known that-I,"WILLIAM' t W LL M- wer 01? U -*T. X4$-' E. i EWING,
acitizenof the United States,resid ingat;
Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas,'have invented certain new anduse ful' I mprovements in Furnaces, ofwhlch the following isa specification.
This ginven ion 1 relates to "new' and useful V l ,1 improvementsin' a-fu'rnacef One I ob ect of the invention 1s to provide a, furnace of the character described which g has been specially designedfor the burning of pulverized rice hulls, for fuel, andwhic'hiis also a'dapted' for utilizing othersimilar fuels, such aschaff, sawdust, and the like. In the hull'shas heretofore been a problem inasmuch as ifthey are burned in the ordinary furnace, great quantities ofblackashes result, "whic'hare ejected from the smoke stacks, and contaminate the air'to suchan extentfthat inf most cities, there are ordiposes; The same is true when it is sought to nanceslagainst using said hulls for fuel pure andconsequently, these roducts must be 1 products incon'nection With. the boiler for hauled away and dispose of in some. other manner at considerable-expense, and at a totaljloss. 'It'is the obj ect" of this invention to provide a furnace which will utilize these generating steam} and'which willentirely consume such fuels without contaminating the surrounding air with the ashes given off.
Another object ofthe invention resides in f R the provision of ayfurnace, which will genuse 0 eratereat heat at little expense and by the' f which, the maximum fuel valuerof;
said products will beiob tained if; i With the above and other'ob ects"1n"v1ew,
the invention has particularrelation to eer tain novel features of construction, arranges ment of parts,"anduse, an example of wh ch is given inthis specification and illustrated in'xthe accompanying drawings,' wherein: u a, Figure 1, shows anend view of the completedevice shown partiallyein section. o
Fig. 2, is a vertical; sectional view,
' Fig. '3, isa fragmentaryjsectional view taken Ion the line 2-52 .of Figglof the"discharge pipe,

5 Referring now, more particularly to 3 the drawings, wherein like numerals of refer e ence designate similar-partsin ea'ch'of the .w
"figures, {the numeral 1, refers to the steam chamber of'the boiler underneath which are the water pipes: 2, through which the I water circulates, and'in which the" steam isqgenerg ated, said steai'n entering the steamchamber 1 from' said pipes through thewater legs/3,
*3; The boiler is mountediabovethe furnace,
being sustained on the columnsA 'in ifront and onthewall 5 inthe rear. 1 The rear part ofthe furnace contains a combustion ch'amal i berg-formed of the downwardly; converging wallsti and 7 "which are preferably lined with fire' brick and underneath the lining of;
the'wall 6,-there is a coil pipe 8,;which-is heated from the -'combi1stion chamber and connected to i't,-there is afan or blower. 9, provided to generate the amount of air our,
rent required 1 according-i to ,the 7 amountr'of ,fuel' 'cjonsumed, and to force said airf-through said coi-l'pip'e" in which the air: is .heated,and l V frornthe coil pipe, 8-, 'th'e airline 8'. extends forwardly underneaththe furnace. From the airline 8" leads thequpwardly extending pipes 1 0', 11and112, which are controlled-by suitable gatevalves The pipei 10 dis chargesthe*heated air up through the per for'ated inclined bridge'jwall 13. Thepipe 1 '11: discharges .theheated 'airtupin'to'ithe transverserhollowi casting 14: whosel upper face is perforated and the pipe IQ-discharges heated air up'through the grate15 from the xashpi'tintoxthe fire. chamber I6; Behind this fire chamber, there is located a transverse bafilewalll-T composed ofopen brickwork;
and located between the hollowfcasting .1 4,-
, A 8',=is turned;
and the grate of th'e ash pit .7
[The forward end of the'pipe backwardly and enters the frontaendyor the i furnace, and within said backwardly turnedend, there is located an oil-burnerof any desired form, The numeral 19, refers ,;tb a
fuel container, wherein-ethe pulverized hulls or other pulverized fuel 'isi stored. 1 1 The fuel isdelivered from said.- contai-ner by the con veyer 20, and is thereby dischargedinto the Q enters the furnace.
down spout 21, Whichenters the pipe 8, in front of the burner 18. This-down spout is formed with a. cylindricalcasing 22, and a pipe 23 gleading from the steam chamber- 1,
orQsiphon to carry the fuel into thefurnace against the, .bafiie Wall 117,- here-combustion begins, and thecurrent carries. theunconsumed fuel andflame' up: along the T bridge Wall 13, and :overiinto the combusti'onchamber, .theuflame and heated air passing up among the; Water pipes '2, and;heating-the Water thereimandthe smoke andashespassing on :through the outlet conduit 25,; I into the Smokestack 26. Withinthis smoke stack are arranged the circularsprayers'27,
27, through which ater is sprayed from the 7 water pipe. 28,. to settleany ashesand unconsumed fuel containedinthe smoke,.and these. settlings are carrieddown. into the hopper-1 like; bottom 29, of thesmofkeistack, and carriedoff through. the Water pipe 30.. The
' principal part of the ashes will beretairied in the combustionchamberand arranged vunderne'ath saidlichamber, there, is the transversedischargeppipe. 3-1,.having aninlet 32;, which; communicates with, the combustion chamber, and. through. which the ashes enter said discharge pipe, and the ashes so enteringsald pipe are carriedawayibywater circulatingw therethrough, or'fby steam which may be jetted thereincthrough the steam pipe'33..v This pipe 3 1. entersthe upper part of; a'suitablereceiving vat 3i, and the ashes arelthereby delivered into the hopper 35,"
contained in said vat, through. Which the ashes are, delivered into the: receptacle. 36, U into WhlChthQ-lOWBI' part 0f the vat .is
formed. i a
' jFor-the pnrposesof cleaningofi'ithe bridge wall 13,; and keeping it free'from any de positslof fuel or ashes; the steamt'jets 37 are provided :throughwhiclr .a fan like jet of steam. is projected'up along the. said Wall, which sweeps oft-the ashes and unconsumed f'uel, and delivers them-into the combustion and-7 of the combustionchamber are pro- ,vided with steam' jetsr38,i38, arranged to chamber and likewise, the inclinedavalls 6 projectjets of /steam down along'said Walls .tokee'p them cleansed from the ashes which maybe deposited thereon. r
:By theuse of this type: of jfurnaceyany .kind of combustible pulverized material may beutilizedasa fuelgithus resulting ina'the great saving of fuel,; andegenerating a great lhat; for the" production of. energy necessary the fuel is dischargedainto the furnace.
in the operationof a plant, and effectually 3 disposing of the objectionable products of combustion which Would otherwise escape into. and "contaminate the surrounding at f mosphere.
What I claim isz 1 r 1; 'Afurnace'for' boilers having a combusvvi'th inclined Walls Which converge doWn- Wardly a discharge pipe underneath said chamber, and communicating therewith, and
provided to receive the ashes therefrom, an I air pipe entering thefront of thefurnace and formed into acoiL-underneaththe:chain:
