Abstract
282,109. Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges. Dec. 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Pulverulent - f u e l burners.- A pulverulent-fuel furnace particularly adapted for locomotives is supplied with fuel through transversely slotted burner tubes arranged along the whole length of opposite sides of the fire-box, the slots being vertical and secondary air being admitted to the fire-box above the burner tubes. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the fire-box 2 is supplied with fuel from a bunker 3 and air from a blower 6 through pipes 9 leading into burner tubes 7 arranged on each side of the fire-box and delivered into the fire-box through slots 15 inclined towards the inlet pipe 9. The burner tubes which may also extend along the front and rear walls, are of decreasing cross-section towards the rear and are cooled by a steam or water chamber or tube 12 provided with slots 16 corresponding with the slots 15. The cooling medium enters the tube 12 by the pipe 13 and escapes through the pipe 14. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the burner tubes 7 are cooled by a cooling medium flowing through tubes 12, 12b, provided with ribs 17. Blades 20 formed of copper or like highly conducting material are arranged between the burner tube 7 and the cooling tubes 12, 12 and provide slots inclined towards the fuel and air inlet. Water may be circulated through the burner cooling tubes from the feed water tank or from the boiler. As shown in Fig. 7, the cooling tubes 12, 12 are connected at their rear ends to the rear wall of the fire-box at. 22 and at their front ends to vertical tubes 24 arranged in front of the tube plate 23 and communicating with the boiler at 25, 26. In an alternative arrangement the front ends of the tubes 12, 12b are connected to water tubes which pass beneath the baffle wall 32 and are connected to the rear wall of the fire-box. Air for secondary combustion is supplied to the firebox through a front passage 43 controlled by a damper 44 and through a rear passage 47. A supplementary burner 58, Fig. 1, is provided for ignition purposes and for maintaining the temperature of the boiler when the main burners are shut down.
