Abstract

329,010. Foltz, I. W. Feb. 5. 1029. Air supply, heating.-A boiler furnace has air passages 19 embedded in the side walls of the firebox communicating with looped 'horizontal conduits 15, 16 in the floor or walls of the combustion chamber behind the firebridge, the air being drawn from the ash-pit at 11 by a conduit 13 and the heated air being supplied to the firebox at 20. The conduits 19, 13 communicate with the looped conduits 15 by passages 14 in the bridge 4<1>. A central pier 3 on the bridge exends to the boiler 1 and provides two lateral. openings opposite wings 5 extending inwardly from the side walls of the combustion chamber, causing eddying of the gases. At the rear of the combustion chamber a central pier 4 is arranged opposite the space between the wings 5. Clean-out doors 21 are provided for the conduits 15, 16. In forced draught furnaces the air pipe supplying air to the ash-pit is tapped to supply the conduits 13. The air heating conduits may be arranged entirely in the side walls of the setting. The invention may be applied to gas, oil or pulverized coal fired furnaces.
