In the burning in shaft furnaces of granular materials requiring not more than 8% carbon admixed therewith, e.g. cement, limestone, ores or fly ash, sufficient inert gas is blown in to delay ignition of the solid fuel until the fuel and the charge reach a temperature well in excess of the minimum fuel ignition temperature. The inert gas may be combustion gases from the furnace or from an outside source, steam or water vapour.
