761,029. Furnace installations. STAMICARBON N.V. Nov. 10,1954 [Nov. 13, 1953], No. 32571/54. Class 51 (1). A furnace installation of the type described in Specification 698,097 is adapted for the firing of coal by the provision of a movable member in the hopper which restricts the fuel inlet area and directs the feed to the front wall of the combustion chamber and a movable member adjacent the front wall which closes the combustion air apertures therein. As shown in Fig. 1, a cast-iron plate 3 is detachably hooked over one of a series of angle-bars 5 secured to the water-cooled wall 6 of the hopper 1 such that it restricts the fuel feed inlet to the combustion chamber 2 whilst a closure plate 11 is detachably mounted in front of the front wall 4 of the chamber such that combustion air from the box 10 cannot pass horizontally therethrough. A fuel feed control roller 19 with ribs 20 may be mounted over the feed opening the roller being motor driven, mounted in bearings supported in the hopper side walls, and hollow such that hot gases may be passed therethrough to cause a preliminary gasification of the coal. By suitably arranging the roller within the hopper the coke so formed is broken thereby before feeding into the chamber 2. Specifications 698,098 and 698,100 also are referred to.
