Abstract
744,033. Solid-fuel furnaces. MARTIN, R. M. L. Dec. 1, 1953 [Dec. 2, 1952], No. 33288/53. Class 51 (1). In a furnace having a grate 5 fed with fuel from a hopper 1 through a conduit 2 and operated according to the multi-stage process described in Specification 669,914, the quantity of fuel undergoing combustion and the overgrate air supply are maintained approximately constant by means of a pivoted flap 8 located in the conduit 2 and actuated by variations in the level, within the conduit opening, of the summit 11 of the heap of fuel 10 on the grate. The conduit 2 has an air inlet 12 and houses a fuel feeder 4 driven by a motor the operation of which is controlled by the movement of the flap 8, this arrangement ensuring that both the level of the summit 11 of the fuel and the cross section of the air entry passage around said summit are maintained approximately constant. Under-grate air is supplied at 6 and the hot gases generated pass through an outlet 7 to, for example, the combustion chamber of a Lancashire boiler.
