Abstract
798,324. Solid fuel combustion apparatus. GUMZ, W. Oct. 8, 1954 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 29043/54. Class 51 (1). The combustion of a solid fuel which is begun on an ante-grate is completed in a vertical shaft furnace by the horizontal passage therethrough of a mixture of air and the combustion gases from the anti-grate. The furnace shown comprises two inclined ante-grates 1 leading to a combustion shaft 2. During furnace operation, a small quantity of air is passed once through the fuel on each grate 1 and the resulting gases are drawn from the space 11 above the grates to a flue 5 in which they are mixed with the major part of the combustion air prior to passage through the shaft in the direction 9. The inner walls of the flue 5 may be lined with finned-tubes in which, when the furnace is associated with a boiler, the boiler water may be heated. Water may be sprayed into the flue 5 through a pipe 10. In a further embodiment, a pair of spaced ante-grates discharge into a horizontal passage through which the fuel is conveyed to the shaft, the gases from the grates being drawn into a vertical flue disposed therebetween.
