Abstract
827,233. Solid fuel furnaces. BEER, J. M. June 2, 1958 [March 2, 1957], No. 7019/57. Class 51 (1). A solid fuel fired boiler furnace having a travelling grate 7 below a combustion chamber 9 and at least one pulverulent fuel burner 20 within the combustion chamber has a substantially upright duct 1 between a supply of solid fuel and a vessel 5 from which fuel is fed to the grate, and a passage 10 leading flue gases from the combustion chamber to the vessel 5 or duct 1 so that particles of fuel are scrubbed off the lumps of coal and passed through an extension 15 of the duet to a pulverizer 16 to the burner 20. A damper-controlled air inlet 11 to the passage 10 allows the temperature of the flue gases passed to the vessel 5 or duet 1 to be regulated, and a dampered by-pass 13 allows the velocity of the gases passed into the vessel or duct to be controlled. Fuel from a hopper 3 is supplied in regulated amounts via a feeder 4 and branch duct 2 to the vertical duct 1, and the lumps of fuel from the hopper 5 pass through a seal 8 to a hopper 6 feeding the grate 7 directly. The dust entrained by the flue gases pass through extension 15 to the pulverizer 16 which includes a fan to ensure the flow of gases through the system, and through a classifier 21 to the burner 20. A damper-controlled air inlet 17 enters the extension duct 15 immediately upstream of the mill 16.
