Abstract

672,287. Furnaces. WALTHER & CIE, AKT.-GES. Oct. 11, 1949 [Nov. 1, 1948], No. 26101/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 11, 1950.] Class 51 (i). A steam generator of the water tube type fired by solid fuel or a travelling grate a is supplied below the grate with primary air in quantities gradually increasing from front to rear of the grate in such a manner that in the front zone b an intensive combustion is initiated by the air, in the middle zone c the air pressure produces incipient " fluidization " of the fuel bed, and in the rear zone d the unburnt fuel remaining is lifted completely off the grate and driven towards the front of the combustion chamber by heated secondary air supplied through nozzles carrying flue dust collected in a filter n disposed behind the convection system of the generator. Heated tertiary air is supplied through adjustable nozzles a, t, and u disposed in the corners of the combustion chamber, which nozzles may be so arranged that the jets produce the known tangential whirling of furnace gases, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the direction of whirling being alternated by adjacent groups of nozzles. The fuel conveyer b in the front wall of the combustion chamber is protected by the tube-lined wall i and also by a further stream of mixed cold and heated air issuing from nozzles v and the proportion of cold to heated air is increased by thermostatically controlled valves in the supply pipes as the speed of the fuel conveyer decreases until when the fuel conveyer stops cold air only is supplied. Ashes and slag are discharged over an ash-plate f into a shaft g where any fuel adhering thereto is completely burnt.
