The combustion chamber, Fig. 2, of the furnace shown is substantially D-shaped in horizontal cross-section and burners 46 ... 51 are arranged on the six sides of a portion of the chamber front wall such that projections of the nozzle axes intersect whilst the burners 45, 52 are directed towards a location intermediate the chamber rear wall 60 and the axis of intersection. Coal from a bunker 11 is fed by conveyers 12 to furnace gas shafts 21 ... 28 each of which charges a beater mill 13 ... 20. These mills induce furnace gases from the chamber 1 through openings 29 ... 36 and the shafts 21 ... 28, cold air being added in the shafts in known manner as required for tempering purposes. The mills have classifying means and the pulverised fuel produced is blown through respective risers 37 ... 44 to the burners each of which consists of fuel nozzles 53 ...55, Fig. 1, and air nozzles 56 ... 59. Downstream of the D-shape crosssection the chamber may be of triangular or rectangular cross-section.
