Combustion gases from a furnace 1 are drawn downwardly through the fuel on an inclined grate 3 between a hopper 4 and a travelling grate 2 by jets 11 delivering secondary air into pockets 10 at the side of the inclined grate 3 connected to the space beneath the grate 3. The combustion products and secondary air are delivered above the travelling grate 2 by nozzles 9 to converge above the grate 2.
