In a solid-fuel furnace having a moving-grate stoker 22 extending into the furnace chamber from a front wall thereof, the furnace chamber has a row of nozzles 60 which direct jets of air adjacent the fuel bed horizontally or at a downward inclination to the horizontal not greater than 10 degrees, together with a second row of nozzles 62 spaced above the first row and which direct jets of air horizontally or at a downward inclination.
