Class 51 (1) Combustion apparatus comprises a radiation space or chamber 15 with fluid-cooled walls which receives gases from a furnace 1 also having fluid-cooled walls and operating so as to discharge slag in liquid form, together with a second furnace 3 which burns pulverulent fuel so as to discharge incombustible matter from the fuel in solid form and which discharges gases into the radiation chamber. The furnace 3 has oppositely-directed sets of burners 4. Air or cooled furnace gases may be introduced into the radiation chamber at 16.
