Abstract

747,761. Refuse-consuming furnaces. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS, Ltd., J. Nov. 29, 1951 [Nov. 29, 1950], No. 29265/50. Class 51(1). A bagasse or like furnace comprises a front wall, side walls and a vertically extending rear wall and has an externally arranged feed chute which is in direct communication with the interior of the furnace through a feed opening, and which is arranged so that bagasse feeds naturally from the chute into the furnace to build up a fuel bed in contact with the said walls and filling the feed opening, the fuel bed having one face inclined at the natural angle of repose of the bagasse and extending between the feed opening and a position intermediate the height of the rear wall, which latter is provided with primary air passages below said position. The furnace shown comprises a pair of conbustion chambers 1 each of which is fed with bagasse &c. by a hopper 7 through a wedge-shaped opening .6 disposed at the top of the front wall 2. From the opening 6 which does not extend across the entire width of chamber each chamber roof 5 extends towards the rear wall 4 at an angle equal to or greater than, the angle of repose of the bagasse B. Primary combustion air is supplied from the duct 9 to the openings 8, 10, whilst secondary air is supplied via duct 11 and openings 10. Tertiary air is supplied through openings 13 in the side walls of the exit flue passages 12 leading from the combustion chambers whilst any deposited slag is removed through openings 15. The combustion gases may be utilised for steam generation and ash is removed from each chamber 1 through an opening 14. In an alternative arrangement the opening 6 extends across the entire width of each chamber. The combustion may be controlled by varying the amount of combustion air supplied.
