[Class 51 (i)] In a furnace adapted for the disposal of molasses, the molasses is introduced into a combustion chamber behind the firebridge and burnt with an additional supply of air and means is provided to permit the removal of the slag and coked residues deposited on the bottom of the chamber. The invention is shown applied to a furnace in which bagasse or other fuel is burnt on a pair of independently fired grates each comprising inclined bars 7 and horizontal bars 8. The combustion products pass through a secondary combustion chamber 6 and through an outlet 23 to a boiler. Molasses is introduced with air through the roof of the furnace, passes through the combustion gases and is coked and burnt on the floor 29 of the chamber. Additional air is supplied through a door controlled opening 33 from a hollow firebridge 5. The bottom of the chamber has inclined surfaces 29 which direct the slag into a channel 30 from which it is periodically withdrawn. The molasses is fed' to each roof opening 9 from a tank 12 which supplies a feeder pipe 10 having a nozzle 19 projecting into a pipe 16 arranged centrally within the lining 15 of the opening 9 and having serrations 22 at its lower end. Air is admitted to the pipe 16 and also the annular space between the pipe and the lining 15, vanes 18 giving the air a rotary motion.
