Class 51(i) A furnace of the kind wherein fuel is introduced through the top and ash and cinders discharged at the bottom, part of the combustion air entering through apertures in the front wall of the combustion chamber and the combustion gases escaping through apertures in the opposite, rear, wall, the front and rear walls being formed by spaced vertical water-cooled tubes 5, 6, is characterized in that the tubes of one or both walls are provided with projections 21 which are disposed horizontally between and in spaced order along the tubes so as to obstruct the passage of fuel between the tubes of the said walls. Primary air also enters the fire zone V through the slag bed S and secondary air is supplied by pipe 26 to the combustion gases emerging through the tube-wall 6. The fuel is supported on an inclined water-cooled grate 10. Specifioations 698,097, 698,098 and 698,100.are referred to.
