Abstract
789,912. Solid fuel-fired and liquid and gaseous fuel-fired combustion apparatus. VORKAUF, H. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 16, 1954], No. 34547/55. Class 51 (1). A furnace of the type comprising a combustion shaft surmounted by a solid fuel storage hopper is adapted for oil or gas firing by fitting a burner or burners in one wall of the hopper. In the water-tube boiler of Fig. 1, which comprises a combustion shaft 1, topped by a hopper 2 which is filled from above through an opening 7, oil fuel firing is made possible by the provision of a burner 3. The shaft 1 comprises spaced water-cooled tubes 4, 5 such that combustion air flows horizontally and in order to efficiently burn oil the hopper 2, which is formed of water-cooled tubes, has the cooling effect of its bottom inclined wall nullified by a refractory slab. Water tubes 6 cool the side walls of both hopper 2 and shaft 1. In the boiler shown in Fig. 2, an oil burner 3 is arranged in the hopper roof, the air for combustion being preheated by being passed through an air jacket 18 used for cooling the refractory 8 surrounding the burner. In the boiler of Fig. 3 oil and solid fuel may be burnt simultaneously the hopper 2 being divided into chambers 10, 11 by a partition 9 for this purpose. An opening 12 through which combustion products emanating from the burner 3 pass to the boiler is closed by a slide 15 when oil firing is not in progress or when the chamber 11 is used to store solid fuel. In the simultaneously oil and solid fuel-fired boiler of Fig. 4 the combustion gases emanating from the burner 3 have to pass through the column of fuel in the shaft 1, thereby accelerating the ignition of fresh solid fuel.
