Baffles; liquid and gaseous fuel furnaces. - The tubes, ducts, and flues of steam-generators, feed-water-heaters, liquid-heaters, and apparatus for heating and melting metals and other materials are packed with a number of bricks, blocks, or shaped pieces in contact one with another, and arranged so as to form with the walls of the tube &c. helical passages for the burning or burnt products of combustion ; these passages are such that a reduction in the velocity of the gases, due to cooling, is prevented by a reduction of the cross-sectional area of the passages. Fig. 1 shows a boiler tube or flue 2 packed with bricks or blocks 1, which form with the tube 2 helical passages 3, the crosssectional area of which is reduced gradually, or preferably, abruptly, and in steps, by varying the breadth of the blocks. Fig. 3 shows a flue 2 containing shaped pieces 1 forming with the flue four passages 4 such as described. Similar devices may be used for obtaining three or any other number of passages.
