Abstract

20,101. Collins, H. E., and Collins, W. F. March 5, 1914. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-A furnace for use mainly for heating boilers, but applicable generally where heat is required, comprises a gasproducer a from which the gas escapes into valve - controlled passages e communicating through openings g with distributing-passages f having openings h leading into a combustion chamber i situated in a mass of chequer work arranged beneath the boiler j or other apparatus to be heated. Air for combustion is conveyed to the combustion chamber i by means of passages k passing through the walls of the producer and communicating by means of openings m with passages l discharging through openings n. The gas and air passages e, f, k, l are formed of refractory blocks, preferably silica, of the shape shown in Figs. 4 and 6. These blocks are recessed at t so as to form, when the blocks are placed together, tubular channels The end butting-surfaces of the blocks are provided with recesses u, v to form communicating and discharge passages for the gas and air. The gases from the combustion chamber i issue through slits o, o' in the crown of the combustion chamber and the chequer brickwork. Instead of using the channels in the blocks for conveying the gas and air, silica or other suitable pipes may be enclosed in the channels and used for that purpose.
