Abstract
23,599. Lester, J. F. Dec. 24. Smoke-consuming.-The apparatus is shown as fitted to the external furnace of a tubular boiler, but is equally applicable to other furnaces. Above the grate is supported a refractory block, preferably of fireclay and asbestos. This block is traversed by curved tapering passages 7<a>, through which the hot gases pass, and in which they are mixed with hot air supplied through passages 14. The air is heate in a chamber 10 supplied through an opening 11. The gases pass out of the tubes 7<a> into a combustion chamber 8, supplied with hot air from the chamber 10 by an opening 13. In a modification, the heating-chamber 10 is d spensed with, and air is supplied from the front of the furnace by passages 14<a>, each of which communicates with several of the tubes 7<a>, as shown in Fig. 6. The refractory block is shown as made ia one piece, but is preferably made in sections.
