12,887. Herring, W. R. June 25. Gas-producers; steam generator &c. furnaces.- Gas is drawn off from a producer at one or more points below the surface of the fuel. The discharge passage may be bifurcated as shown at B and C in Fig. 1. Fig. 13 shows three separate discharge passages, each with its valve, so that gas of different qualities may be drawn off at different levels. Fig. 11 shows the application of such a producer to a water-tube boiler, and also illustrates an arrangement of air-heating passages with chequerwork in the walls of the producer. The passages F heat air for primary combustion in the producer, and those at E heat air to support the combustion of the gas as it issues at c<1>. Figs. 6 and 8 show an arrangement of gas and air supply passages g and j, for use in the furnace flue of a Lancashire or Cornish boiler. The application of such producers to gas-retort, glass, puddling, and general metallurgical furnaces is mentioned.
