SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,274, dated February 27, 1900.

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. BUTZ, of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Furnaces for Steam-Boilers, of which improvement thefollowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple, inexpensive, and effective means for applying heat derived from the combustion of producer, furnace, or other gas in the generation of steam in a boiler of any preferred type. i
To this end my invention, generally stated, consists in the combination, with a steamboiler, of a setting inclosing two combustionchambers, each adapted to contain a portion of the boiler, a partition-wall interposed between said combustion-chambers, a passage through said wall for the traverse of products of combustion from one combustion-chamber to the other, two regenerator-chambers, and passages, each connecting one of the regenerator-chambers with one of the combustionchambers at points adjacent to said wall. The passage through the said partition-wall may be through the boiler, if desired, and this construction is shown in the drawings; but the invention is not limited to this construction, as a separate opening outside of the boiler may be provided.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical longitudinal central section through one of a pair of steam-boilers of the horizontal tubular type and a gas-furnace, illustrating an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section through the same at the line a: or of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention as applied in connection with horizontal tubular steamboilers, an instance of which is shown in the drawings, one or more of said boilers l 1 (in this case a battery of two) are supported in a setting 2, of brickwork, which is divided by a longitudinal partition-wall 3 into two independent furnaces, one for each boiler. The
furnaces are similar in all particulars, and the entire construction being adaptable to use either with a single boiler or a plurality of boilers it will be herein described as though chambers one from the other at their inner ends. An avenue for the traverse of products of combustion in either direction from one combustion-chamber to the other is provided by the tubes 6 of the boiler, and access is afforded to the combustion-chambers for purposes of cleaning and repair or renewal of the boiler-tubes by openings 7 in the end walls of the setting, which are closed by movable doors 8, formed of metal, with a suitable lining of refractory material.
Air-regenerator chambers 9 9 are built in the setting below the combustion-chambers 4 4, respectively, and in cases in which it is desirable to preheat the gas as well as the air gas-regenerator chambers 10 1O are located adjacent to the air-regenerator chambers. The regenerator-chambers are provided with brick checker-work 11 in the usual manner. Ports or passages 12 12 lead upwardly from the air-regenerator chambers 9 9 on opposite sides of the central partition-wall 5 and com municate with the combustion-chambers 4 4 by passages 13 13, surrounding the lower portion of the shell of the boiler at the inner ends of the chambers 4 4*, respectively. WVhen gas-regenerator chambers 10 10-" are likewise employed, they are connected with the combustion-chamber passages 13 13 by passages 14 14, respectively. Air is admitted to the regenerator-chambers 9 and 9 alternately, and gas from a producer or other suitable source of supply is admitted to the passages 14 and 14 alternately or to the gas- regenerator chambers 10 and 10, when the same are employed, through pipes controlled by reversing-valves of any known and preferred type, the construction and operation of which are familiar to those skilled in the use of regenerator or recuperative furnaces and which, as
they do not in and of themselves form any part of my present invention, are not herein set forth.
In the operation of a steam-boiler furnace of the construction substantially as above described a mixture of gas and air in proper proportions is delivered from the passages, as 14 and 12, leading to the passage, as 13, of one of the combustion-chambers, as 4, and is ignited at the passage 13 and burned in the combustion-chamber 4, the heat which is generated being applied preliminarily to that portion of the boiler-shell which is contained in said combustion-chamber. The heated prod nets of combustion pass through the tubes 6 into the opposite combustion-chamber 45 and thence through the passages 13", 12, and 14; into and through the regenerator-chambers 9 and 10. After their traverse through said chambers has been continued for a sufficient time to thoroughly heat the checker-work therein the direction of supply is changed by manipulation of the reversing-valves in the usual manner, and gas and air are admitted to and are burned in the-combustion-chamher 4, being previously heated by their passage'through the heated checker-work of the regeuerator-chambers 10 and 9. The products of combustion pass through the tubes into the opposite combustion-chamber 4 and thence into the regenerator-chambers 9 and 10 to the checker-work, to which they impart their heat in their passage to the discharge fine or stack. The direction of gas and air supply is changed after the chambers 9 and 10 have been sufficiently heated, and air and gas are passed through them, heated, and delivered to the combustion-chamber 4. The alternation of direction of supplyand delivery of gas and air and products of combustion is continued similarly during the operation of the furnace.
It will be obvious to those familiar with boiler-furnace construction thatvarious structural modifications of my invention may be made in accordance with the requirements of the special forms of boilers in connection with which it is employed without departure from its governing principle and essential characteristic features. It will also be seen that the gas-regenerator chambers may be omitted when the gaseous fuel employed is of such character that it is not deemed necessary or desirable to heat it before its admission to the combustion-chambers. I do not, therefore, limit my invention to a construction of which gas-generator chambers independent of and separate from the air-regenerator chambers constitute elements.
I claim as my invention and desire to se cure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a steam-boiler, of a setting inclosing two combustion-chambers each adapted to contain a portion of the boiler, a partition-wall interposed between said combu stion-chambers, a passage through said wall for the traverse of products of combustion from one combustion-chamber to the other, two regenerator-ahambers, and passages, each connecting one of the regenera tor-chambers with one of the combustionchambers at points adjacent to said wall.
2. The combination with a steam-boiler, of a setting inclosing two combustion-chambers, each adapted to contain a portion of the boiler, a partitiomwall interposed between said combustionchambers and having an opening therethrough, an airregenerator chamber and a gas regenerator chamber communicating with one of said combustionchambers through a port opening thereinto adjacent to said partition-wall, and like air and gas regenerator chambers communicating with the other combustion chamber through a port adjacent to said partition-wall.
3. The combination, with a return tubular steam-boiler, of a setting inclosing two combustion-chambers, each surrounding a portion of the shell of the boiler and open to the ends of the tubes thereof, adjacent to its outer end wall, a partition-wall interposed between the combustion-chambers and forming the inner end wall of each of them, two air-regenerator chambers and two gas regenerator chambers built in the setting below the combustion-chambers, and passages, each connecting one of the combustion-chambers, adjacent to its inner end wall, with one of the air-regenerator chambers and one of the gasregenerator chambers.
