To allwhom itmay concern.
Be it known that I, Eileen PI'JCK'HAM; of Queen Annes Chambers, Westminster, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve of which the following isa specification. A
This invention relates to the construction of furnaces for supplying heat to steam boilers or generators and for heating buildings of the kind where the products of com-' busti'on are more completely converted into gas by being brought into contact with or passed through chambers lined with or constructed of firebrick or similar refractory material, so arranged as to'become highly heated, and hereafter referred to as gasify-' ing flues or chambers,.whereby the resulting products contain little or constituent when they are brought into contact with the boiler or generator, and the invention has for its object to provide an im proved construction of the said type of furnace.
I am aware that it has been proposed to employ constricted or tapered fiues where a single arch has been provided extending over the fire grate and beyond the same, but it has not hitherto been proposed to employ a plurality of superposed horizontal tapered flues constructed or lined. with firebrick such as hereinafter described and claimed for the purpose setforth.
According to this invention I employ a plurality of superposed horizontal tapered fines constructed or lined with refractory material and the said flues are so tapered as to be constricted toward their outlet or where they lead into an adjacent or continuing flue, thereby constricting the flow of the products of combustion which are being highly heated or gasified therein prior to being brought into contact with the boiler or generator or the like. The invention is limited tohorizontal fines and does not include flues which are inclined downward.
The improved construction can moreover be utilized for super-heating the steam before it is used, the steam being passed through suitable pipes suitably arranged in the gasifying fines and a much drier steam obtained without the additional expense of a superheater.
- The improved furnace can also be utilized for supplying heat to buildings and for bakmg and cooking purposes.
no non-gaseous The accompanying drawings show in longitudinal section several, constructions of gaslfying. furnace fitted to boilers and also for heating buildings and for cooking purposes. I
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the construction of my improved furnace as applied to a Babcock and Wilcox type of tubular boiler;
Fig. 2 shows a similar but modified construction adapted to a fire tube boiler;
Fig. 2 is a planet certain parts illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 3 shows the application to a Babcock and Wilcox boiler without steam superheating tubes;
Fig. 4 is a similar construction to Fig. 3 applied to a horizontal fire tube boiler;
Fig. 5 shows the invention adapted for heating buildings;
Fig. 6 shows the invention adapted for baking and cooking purposes.
"The construction of my improved furnace for steam boilers or generators as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and 3 consists of a fire box a, a horizontal firebrick combustion chamber b in the rear of the fire box pref erably separated by a bridge wall 0 between the fireplace and the chamber 6. Over the combustion chamber 7) are horizontal firebrick chambers 12 b and b which are formed by the horizontal firebrick arches 1, 2 and 3, separating the chambers. The
chamber 6 may be formed with closed ends as shown in Fig. 1 or with the rear end open as shown in Fig. 2. The terminal 'gasifying chamber 6 Fig. 1, or 7), Fig. 2, is tapered or constricted toward the outlet end.
In Fig. 1 both ends of the firebrick chamber b are closed and the flameor gas passes upward mainly through the upright flues e in the sides of the furnace walls and partly through openings in the top of the firebrick arch 1 and through an opening 9 in the firebrick arch 2. The gas passes upward through andaround the chamber '7) t0 the constricted chamber 7) and from b to the chamber 6 in which the tubes are located and passes around the tubes as shown on its way to the flue e leading to the stack. Over the top of the tubes is (preferably) placed the horizontal arch 4 to retard the flow of the gas and deflect it against the tubes.
To superheat the steam I convey the steam from the steam 'drum or receiver d downh. To aid the combustion of the gas I ma introduce jets of superheated steam throng the pipes g, Fig. 2. I also introducejets of cold air over the bridge wall a by means of the pip'e'o as shown in F1g. 2 when more oxygen is required for combustion.
. The construction shown in Flg. 3 1s somewhat similarto. Fig. 1 but without the superheater, the'fui'nace being somewhat simplified in that the flow 'of the chamber 6 is level with the top of the br1dge.
Fig. 4 shows a furnace slmilar to that shown in Fig. 3 but applied to a horizontal boiler with fire tubes.
The firebrick chambers 12 and b are taered so as to be contracted at their extreme ends thereby choking and retardlng the flow of the gas and aiding combustion.
The construction of my improved furnace for heating buildings with steam or hot a r as shown in Fig. 5 consists of a fire box a separated from a rear combustlon firebrick chamber 6 by a bridge wall and upper combustion chambers b and 6 formed by horizontalfirebrick arches 1, 2 and 3, through which the flame from the fire box 0.- passes on its way to the stack or chimney. Over the combustion chamber 12 I construct a chamber b which is heated by the firebrick arch 3 in which are openings that permit the gas from-the chamber 6 to enter.
In these several chambers I introduce a series of pipes so arranged that the cold air or cold water if as desired is introduced at 1 into the lower pipe or tube 71 and passes upward through thepipes located .in the chambers b, b, b and b and out at the opening a. If hot air is desired for heating the building, cold air is introduced at n, and 1f steam heat is desired cold water is intro- 'duced into the lower pipe 2' at n and the generated steam will escape'through the upper pipes in the chamber b at the opening n. The heat of-the various chambers can be regulated by the dam ers it so that a uniform temperature can e obtained.
One construction of my improved furnace for baking and cooking is shown in Fig. 6 which consists of afireplace a, a horizontal tapered combustion chamber or flue b, a rear cooking chamber m, an airtight baking chamber 1- located over the combustion chamber 1), horizontal tapered combustion chambers 6', b and an upper airtight baklng chamber 7, so constructed by horizontal firestack or chimney, and the heat derived will heat the baking ovens r and r at the desired temperatures which can be regulated by means of the dampers h k k and h". The size of the cooking chamber m can be increased 'by extending the length of the chamber and the end extension of the arch 1, and its iron cover can be made to suit the requirements. I I
When the combustion chambers have once been heated to a bright cherry red, the dampers can be partially closed so as to prevent the escape of the gas too freely and much less fuel is required, and when the boiler or generator is only required for daily use the dampers can be' closed, completely and the heat of the combustion chambers and the generator retained until the next day without any additional fuel being put in the fire box during the night.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a furnace of the character set forth, in combination, a fire box, and a plurality of superposed horizontally arranged flues' of refractory material through which pass the products of combustion, said flues beingtapered in the direction of the passage of the 2. In a furnace of the character set forth,
in combination, a firebox, a plurality of superposed horizontally arranged lines of refractory material through which pass the products of combustion, said fiues being tapered in the direction of the passage of the combustion products therethrough to vide constricted outlets, and horizontally arranged fluid conduits disposed in certain of said flues.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 4 two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR PECKHAM.
