Abstract

14,971. Stiens, P. July 4. Liquid and gaseous fuel fittings.-In a process and apparatus for the manufacture and burning of gas obtained from liquid fuel, a generating-chamber ar, which may be arranged in the combustion chamber or furnace flue of a steam boiler, is divided by a grate or perforated partition b into two compartments. A layer of coal, carbon, iron, or other reducing-material is placed above the grate. An injector, connected to a water supply f and a petroleum supply g, enables a mixture of these liquids, together with air drawn through a pipe e, to be introduced through a pipe c to the space above the grate. Below the grate, and at each end of the chamber, a discharge branch i leads to a transverse pipe k. The transverse pipes are connected together by a series of pipes provided with perforations through which the gas issues. The gas is ignited and heats the chamber a and the combustion chamber. At first, only air and petroleum are introduced through the pipe c, but, when the layer of reducing-material is incandescent, the water is also turned on. One of the pipes k may be provided with a branch p, through which any superfluous gas generated may be led to another place for consumption or to a gas holder. In another arrangement, two. generators are employed, the spaces below the grates being connected by a pipe. Each generator has a supply tank, and the gases generated pass into common transverse pipes. On starting, oil and air are introduced into one generator only. The second generator is then started, and, when they have both become hot enough, the oil may be shut off intermittently or permanently from one or the other of the generators. The combustion chamber is provided with a refractory lining o at a slight distance from its walls, the lining being provided with perforations for the passage of the hot gases, and serving to protect the metal of the chamber from the jets of flame.
