Muffle furnaces. - In a muffle furnace of the kind in which the muffle A is formed of porous refractory material, such as chamotte or magnesia, on the surface of which " flameless " combustion of gaseous fuel takes place, the gas and air mixture is supplied at b<2> to an upwardly enlarging chamber b<1> which serves for the combustion of the mixture until the temperature of the structure rises sufficiently for " flameless " combustion to take place throughout. The muffle A is closely surrounded by a jacket B formed with a waste gas outlet b<3> and preferably lined with material similar to that of which .the muffle is made.
