Abstract
433,551. Boiler &c. furnaces; grates; supplying air for combustion. STENFORS, F. I. E., Sundsvall, Sweden. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5231. [Class 51 (i)] A furnace divided by a grate into a fuel chamber 1 in which incomplete combustion and generation of gas takes place and a combustion chamber 4, the secondary air supply to which takes place at the grate, is provided with one or more primary air intakes 7 extending into the fuel so that the primary air is substantially uniformly distributed with respect to the grate. The secondary air is preferably supplied through a hollow perforated grate but the grate bars may be solid and the air supplied through a tube system adjacent the grate. In addition to the solid fuel, liquid fuel may be supplied through a pipe 34 or gaseous fuel through a pipe 35. Alternatively liquid or gaseous fuel only may be used, the solid fuel being replaced by pieces of refractory material. The primary air intake may be in the form of one or more horizontal pipes conveniently of triangular section and open at the bottom, Fig. 8. Instead of being horizontal the grate may be V-shaped, conical, inverted conical or cylindrical. When the grate is of hollow form it is preferably built up of sections comprising perforated bars 5 supported by and communicating with distributing boxes 6 through pipes 21, Fig. 12. The invention is also shown applied to sectional boilers and water-tube boilers.
