Abstract
430,834. Furnace grates. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS, Ltd., J., Etting- shall Engineering Works, Wolverhampton.- (Plummer, G. A. ; 4, Fairlie Place, Calcutta, India) Jan. 25, 1934, No. 2604. [Class 51 (i)] In a furnace, more particularly for burning bagasse, rice husks, and other fibrous material, having a steeply sloping grate and at the lower end thereof means for supporting the fuel bed and the accumulated ash and slag, the supporting means is adapted to be withdrawn from the rear plane of the fuel bed thus allowing the discharge of ash and slag whilst still supporting the fuel bed proper so that it maintains its normal contour. The furnace has a stepped grate 11 inclined at an angle of about 52‹ and at the bottom the fuel and ash are supported on an ash valve 21 comprising a rear wall 29 and a number of webs such as 25 on which are mounted curved firebars 23. The valve is pivoted at the centre of curvature of the firebars by means of a fork at the lower end of the wall 29 which fork embraces and is pinned to a rocking shaft 33. In one position, as shown, the firebars support the fuel and ash. By means of a handle 37 the valve may be rotated so that the fuel is supported on the rear ends of the firebars 23 but the ash is allowed to fall into the ashpit 34. In both positions of the valve the wall 29 prevents the passage of air between the ashpit 34 and the space 15 beneath the grate 11.
