DOWN WARD-DRAFT FURNACE.
Application filed July 21, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, ELIJAH R. JACQUES, citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Downward- Draft Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furnaces such as are used for the heating of water or for other purposes and it has for an object to provide a novel construction and arrangement in which liquid fuel may be advantageously combined with solid fuel.
More specifically speaking the invention has for an object to provide a furnace having a draft flowing downwardly through the fire bed, and with the liquid fuel feed means arranged directly above the fire bed and discharging the fuel by gravity thereon.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a vertical sectional view, with the lower part in elevation, of a furnace constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, with certain exterior parts broken away to show the interior construction.
As here shown my improved furnace com prises an outer casing 10 which may be of cylindrical form and vertically arranged and which is here shown as supported a distance above the floor on legs 11. An annular water chamber 10 is here provided in the casing for the water to be heated, it be ing understood that this construction may be modified or eliminated according to the purpose for which the furnace is designed.
Located in the upper portion of this casing just below the top 10 thereof, is a liquid fuel feed device comprising a pair of concentric rings 12, 13 arranged in a common plane and fed by a common pipe leading from any suitable supply source of liquid fuel such as oil. These rings 12, 13 rest on an asbestos pad 15 which is supported in turn on a horizontal partition element 16. Extending downwardly from the rings Specification of Letters Patent.

through suitable apertures in the pad 15 and partition 16 are nozzle tips 17. The asbestos pad 15 serves to insulate the rings from the heat of the fire and prevent vaporization of the oil therein.
Occupying the main body of the casing is the fire-box 20 of the furnace which is of hopper-like formation with the walls made of fire-brick or like material. The front wall 21 and rear wall 22 ofthe fire-box converge downwardly toward one another. At its upper end the fire-box is supported and confined by a U-shaped metal ring 23 while its lower end is supported and capped by the angular metal elements 24. The lower end of the fire-box is closed by a door 25 hinged at one side thereof and adapted for operation by means of an exterior handle 26 fixed on the projecting end of a rock shaft 27 to which the door is fixed. The door is held closed by means of a spring latch 28 engaging the handle 26. At the rear side of the fire-box, adjacent the door 25, a grate element is formed by a series of hollow mem bers 29 of fire-brlck or like refractory material. Suitably supported under the firebox is an ash pan 30 to receive the ashes from the fire-box.
The top of the fire-box 20 is spaced a sufficient distance below the fuel feed device, above described, to accommodate a feed door 32 which is of the usual hinged type and through which the solid fuel, such as coal and peat mixed, or either of these alone, is fed to the fire-box.
A second door 33, is provided in the furnace near the lower end of the fire-box and is arranged with ordinary draft dampers and serves to regulate the draft as will be presently made plain.
At the rear side of the furnace, or opposite the doors 32 and 33, an exit flue 35 is provided for the products of combustion, this exit flue opemng into the main body of the furnace at the lower end of the firebox and leaving the furnace by a horizontal branch 35 just under the oil feed pipe 14.
To obtain a draft through the fire-box the front and rear walls of the latter are provided with air openings 37 suitably spaced over the surfaces thereof, While a baflle plate 38 is extended from the bottom of the rear wall 22 partiall up the side thereof.
It is believed t at the manner of operation and use of my improved furnace will be readily understood from the above description. The fuel being placedin the firebox 20, and the draft door 33 opened, a suction will be created through the openings 37 in the rear wall 22 of the firebox by the flow of air upward through the flue 35 and past the baffle plate 38. An air draft having a diagonally downward course from front to rear through the fire-box will thus be established, and the liquid fuel may be fed as desired downward onto the solid fuel in the fire-box.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A furnace having a fire-box, and means signature.
