FUEL-SAVING DEVICE FOR FURNACES.

Be it known that I, NELSON J. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resi- 'dent of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a'Fuel-Saving Device for Furnaces,-ofwhich the following is a specification.

The invention consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and combination of its parts as will be here inafter more fully set forth and specifically The principal object is to provide a very simple and economicall constructed, yet strong, durable, highly e cient and movable device to be used in the fire-pots or cham bers of furnaces, stoves and the like, for supplying preheated airand an au mented quantity of oxygen to the burning uel and at proper points, in order to effect, as nearly as possible, complete combustion of the fuel" and thereby economize in the quantity thereof used.
A further object is to provide a movable and removable device of the above mentioned eneral character, which can be used in the re-chambers of furnaces and the like without any chan es, whatsoever, in the construction thereo and without being permanently attached to any part of the furnace or stove, yet can be so located, or'read ily shifted or adjusted in its position within the fire-chamber to furnish air and oxygen at the right point or oints to insure the best results in the com ustion of fuel.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention I Figure 1 is a. fragmentary view of a por- 'tion of a furnace showing it equipped with of the device showing it on an enlarged scale from that shown in Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 5 designates a portion of a furnace of the ordinary or well known construction in the fire-pot or chamber 6 of which is located on the upper sur-' face of the grate, which latter is designated as a whole by the numeral 6*, a pair of fuel saving devices constructed according to my invention. As shown in said view of the drawing, the devices are located near the frontwall of the furnace and directly on the grate "bars but are spaced apart and each has its globular expansion chamber 7 located in such a way with respect to the bed of coals 8 as to be. mainly extended above the upper surface'of said bed. The device is by preference made of a single piece or casting, and comprises a hollow base portion 9 provided at its lower edge with an out-turned flange 10 to rest on the grate bars of the furnace and to assist in supporting the "device. Extending from the upper central portion of the base 9 and communicating therewith is a chimney .11 which is by preference slightly tapered toward its upper end. On the upper portion of the chimney 11 and surrounding the same is the globular expansion chamber 7 of the device, which chamber or casing is provided with a horizontally disposed and circumferentially extended opening or slot 12 which is broken by means of a plurality of connecting ribs 13 which unite the lower edge of the upper part 14 of the extension chamber or casing with the upper edge of the lower part 15 as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing; The casing or chamber 7 is reinforced at the lower edge of the part 14 by means of a bead or enlargement 16 which has its upper surface downwardly inclined as shown to prevent lodgment of fuel thereon when the same is being fed to the fire-pot or chamber through the door-way or door-ways of the furnace.
The upper edge of the part 15 of the expansion chamber 7 is also by preference reinforced by means of a bead 17 which ex-' tends around the upper edge of the part 15 and is employed to give additional strength to the'said part and also to to operate with the flat surface of the lower edge of the part 14 of the casing T to provide a passageway having its adjacent surfaces fiat and in parallelism with one another, for directing the heated air from the expansion chamber as it is discharged therefrom. The base 9, chimney 11, and casing 7 is by preference-provided with strengthening ribs 18 at least one of which ribs is provided at the juncture of the expansion chamber 7 with the chimney 11 with an enlargement 19 having therein a lateral opening 20 for the purpose to be presently explained.
As shown, the upper end of the chimney 11 is extended above the slot or discharging opening 12 but terminates some distance below the arched dome of the expansion chamber or casing.
The operation of the device is simple and as follows: 1
One or more of the devices may be placed in the fire chamber of the furnace or stove and at any desired location on the grate thereof, but by preference near, the front wall of the furnace or the wall adjacent the door-way leading to the fire chamber of the furnace or stove. \Vhen in this position the base and chimney of the device will be covered or surrounded by coal, but it will be understood that the expansion chamber or casing 7 will be located above the upper surface of the bed of fuel in-such a way as not to preuent or materially retard the disbharge of air through the discharging opening or slot 12 of said chamber. 7
After the fire has been started, the air drafts through the ash pit and flue of the furnace or stove acting in their usual or normal ways, or which may be regulated by means of dampers in the well known way, will ascend from the ash pit into the base 9 of the device where the air will be heated toa degree and from the hollow base 9 it will pass through'the chimney 11 where it will be further heated and from thence will pass into the expansion chamber-or casing 7 where it will be heated to a high degree of temperature, and be caused to pass from said chamber through the opening, 12 therein in a flat circular stream over the bed of coals to commingle with the particles of combustion within the fire chamber thus causing the latter to be more perfectly consumed.
By the use of my device, it is manifest that it can be placed in any suitable location on the grate by simply cleaning away a place sufficiently large to permit the bottom of the base to rest on the grate bars when the" fuel may be placed around the device or shoveled in through the doorway of the furnace in theusual manner. If it is desired to move the device from one point to another on the grate it is obvious that a poker or rod can be inserted in one of the openings 20, which will enable the device to be moved to any suitable point or removed from the furnace while hot, if desired.
It is further obvious that as the device is adapted to be movably mounted on the grate that the grate bars can be rocked for cleaning the same, or they may be otherwise cleaned without interference with the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A fuel saving device, consisting of a relatively flat hollow base having its lower portion open, an upright chimney centrally mounted on the upper surface of the base in communication with the cavity thereof and a casing surrounding the upper portion of the chimney and mounted thereon, said casing forming an expansion ch mber and provided with a horizontally dis bosed opening for the discharge of air.
