2 Claims.
This invention relates to a water tube steam boiler, and more particularly to a stoker fired installation of the bent tube type.
An object of the invention is to provide a water tube boiler adapted for effective operation where head room limitations are severe. Further objects are to provide a boiler characterized by low draft loss and its particular adaptation for advantageous firing with stokers.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification, but for a better understanding of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention.

The illustrative steam boiler includes a stoker fired furnace from the combustion chamber ll! of which the furnace gases flow across upright steam generating tubes connecting the steam and water drum l2 to the lower drum IA.
The combustion chamber of the furnace has its side walls It and I8 and its roof portions and 22 defined by tubes connected into the circulatory system of the boiler. At the upper part of the boiler such connections include a header 24 extending along the roof of the furnace at right angles to the axis of the drum l2 and connected to that drum by the circulators 25-30, inclusive.
The roof portions 32 and 34 of the furnace wall tubes communicate with the header 24 as indicated in Fig. 2 and they diverge downwardly therefrom toward the opposite furnace side walls l6 and I8.
At the bottomrof the furnace, the wall tubes 35 and 38 communicate with headers 40 and 42 which, in turn, are directly connected to the lower drum I4 by the circulators 44, thus completing the natural circulation steam generating system through the furnace wall tubes.
Steam from the drum [2 passes through the tubes of the superheater 45, and thence to the outlet header G8. The superheater is disposed between the forward group of steam generating tubes to and intermediate group of tubes 54, directly connecting the drums l2 and I l.
The furnace gases pass from the combustion chamber In directly across the steam generating tubes 50, the superheater tubes, and the tubes 5G, to the lower portion of a gas pass 56 which is connected at its upper end to a flue. In this gas pass there is disposed a rear bank of tubes 53 directly connecting the drums l2 and It.
The illustrative stoker is of the underfeed sidedump type, feeding the fuel into the furnace and then upwardly through a central passage 60. As the coal burns it flows gradually toward the sides of the furnace beneath which there are ash pits 62 and 54.
Above the ash pits are the ash dumping plates 55 and 61 which are arranged adjacent the headers to and 42 which have a cooling action effective upon ash collecting on the dump plates. This arrangement also is one in which the ash or slag discharged from the stoker will not attach itself but will drop freely into the ash pits when the dump plates are operated.
The stoker includes a hopper l9 and operating mechanism 12.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes, I have illustrated and described herein the best form of my invention now known to me, and those skilled in the art will understand that changes may be made in the form of the apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention covered by the claims, and that certain features of my invention may sometimes be used to advantage with modified components of the illustrative organization.
I claim:
1. In a steam generator, a setting, a steam and water drum disposed transversely of the setting, a submerged drum disposed transversely of the setting and at the lower part thereof, steam generating tubes connecting said drums and forming a bank of tubes disposed transversely of the setting, an upper header adjacent the upper drum and disposed with its longitudinal axis normal to the axis of the drum, said header being disposed horizontally and extending centrally of the setting, combined roof and wall tubes connected to the header and diverging therefrom to define the roof and opposite side walls of a combustion chamber forwardly of said bank of tubes, a lower header for each of said walls connected to the lower ends of the tubes defining the wall, said lower headers being located at the sides of the setting, a front furnace wall, stoker mechanism feeding coal through the front wall and causing the coal to be burned at the lower part of the combustion chamber so that the furnace gases will pass across steam generating tubes, steam and water connections between the roof header and the steam and water drum, water circulators directly connecting the lower headers to said lower drum and extending forwardly of the drum, and a refractory wall spaced forwardly of the lower drum and extending upwardly of the stoker, said water circulators being arranged between the lower drum and said wall, some of the steam generating tubes being bent to form a furnace screen within the space defined by the wall tubes.
2. In a steam generator, a setting, a steam and water drum disposed transversely of the setting, a submerged drum disposed transversely of the setting and at the lower part thereof, spaced steam generating tubes connecting said drums and forming a tube bank disposed transversely of the setting, an upper header adjacent the upper drum and disposed with its longitudinal axis normal to the axis of the drum, said header extend ing centrally of the setting, combined roof and wall tubes connected to the header and diverging and the steam and water drum, water circulators directly connecting the lower headers to said lower drum and extending forwardly of the drum, and a refractory wall spaced forwardly of the lower drum and extending upwardly of the stoker and its fuel bed, said water circulators being arranged between the lower drum and said wall.
