BOILER WATER DRUM MOUNTING Filed July 11, 1945 Fig. 3' Fig. 4
INVENTOR. Gulver 0. French Patented Nov. 7, 1950 BOILER WATER DRUM MOUNTING Gulver 0. French, Maplewood, N. J., assignor to Combustion Engineering-Superheater, Inc., a
corporation of Delaware Application July 11, 1945, Serial No. 604,441
3 Claims.
This invention relates to steam generating units having integral furnaces lined with tubes which are cooled by water in circulation with the boiler.
In steam generators of this type and particularly in smaller unitary boilers it is not only desirable to have the furnace and boiler tube structures arranged so that they will have simple flow paths of low resistance between the furnace wall tubes and the boiler but it is also desirable that ample provision be made for the expansion of all tubes and that the relative expansions of all furnace and boiler tubes be fixed with respect to a positive anchorage therebetween. The provision of such an anchorage will eliminate or minimize all undue expansion strains caused by temperature changes due to operating conditions as a result of initial strains due to possible improper erection of the related parts and due to any strains which may otherwise have been imposed by the transport of the assembled unit.
How the foregoing, together with other objects and advantages as may hereinafter appear or are incident to the invention are realized, is illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings which Figure l is a longitudinally sectioned elevational view of a steam generating unit embody- Dig the invention; 7
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is anend view on an enlarged scale of the lower boiler drum shown in Fig. 1 illustrating its anchorage to the water wall headers; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side view of Fig. 3.
The steam generator illustrated has an upper steam and water drum l0 interconnected with a lower water drum l2 by banks of vertical tubes l3 and I4. Adjacent these tube banks is a furnace II having its side walls each lined with a row of water tubes [5 which as shown are connected between headers l6 near the bottom of each wall and a common header I! at the top of the furnace, although individual upper headers may be provided. Headers I6 are supplied with water by a number of downcomers I8 leading downwardly from the steam and water drum [0. The top header I1 is connected to the steam and Water drum ID by means of riser tubes l9. Hand holes for cleaning out the Water walls may be provided as in the outside walls of headers I6 and in the top walls of header H.
The two lower headers l6 pass beneath and at right angles to lower water drum [2, supporting said drum by means of pads 20 (Fig. 3). The
headers l6 rest in turn upon a foundation 2|- The downcomers l8 are in alignment with the furnace wall tubes l5 thereby formin continuous side walls from the front of the furnace to the rear of the boiler, to which continuous side Walls a relatively simple outer wall structure may be fastened. Optionally additional down comers l8a may be connected to the bottom drum [2 and the header I6.
Within the furnace is stoker 22 which in this case is of the single retort underfeed type and is shown only in outline. Adjacent to each side of stoker 22 are ash dump grates 23, Fig. 2, which may be alignment with headers l6, whereby the latter serve as clinker chills. Coal is fed to the stoker from hopper 24 by means of a feeding mechanism generally shown at 25.
By theconstruction described above the head-:
support of the boiler on the headers I6 is alsov advantageous in transport since this rigidly maintains the relative position of headers 16 with respect to the boiler drum [0 and downcomers l8 will then not .be strained durin transport. What I claim is:
1. In a steam generator unit of the bottom-f supported type, the combination of a lower water drum extending crosswise of the unit, an upper steam and water drum disposed above said lower drum substantially directly thereover, at least one bank of boiler tubes interconnecting said upper and lower drums and serving to support the upper drum from the lower drum, a furnace combustion chamber adjacent the forward side of said boiler tube bank, water tubes lining the side walls of said furnace chamber and including left and right side wall rows each of which extends atsubstantially right angles to said transverse lower drum, means connecting the upper ends of said side Wall tubes into said upper drum, left and right bottom headers respectively joined with the lower ends of said left and right rows of side wall tubes and respectively extending from forwardly of said transverse lower drum beneath the left and right end portions of that drum to points rearwardly of said drum, means connectinterposed between said left and right lower headers and the said lower water drum for the purpose of supporting said lower drum upon those two headers and also for fixedly spacing that drum above said headers, said support members thus facilitating the proper relative positioning of pressure-part elements of the steam generator during assembly and erection and during operation constituting anchor points with respect to which the aforesaid boiler tubes and side wall tubes connected into circulation with said upper and lower drums expand and contract as the temperature thereof is raised and lowered.
2. In a steam generator unit of the bottomsupported type, the combination of a lower water drum extending crosswise of the unit, an upper steam and water drum disposed above said lower drum substantially directly thereover, at least one bank of boiler tubes interconnecting said upper and lower drums and serving to support.

I
