My invention relates to baffies for fire-boxes and to the combination of a water tube baille and a ire-boX. l aim to provide a baffle giving a relatively long travel to the gases in a fire-box and relatively low maintenance costs.
In order that my invention, together with further objects and advantages, may be clearly understood, I will now describe in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings a particular fire-box containing a baile embodying my invention, the arrangement of the baiile in the ire-box being also within my invention. In said drawings,

The apparatus illustrated in the drawings comprises the lire-box end of a particular type of high pressure, water tube locomotive boiler. However, it will be understood that in its broader aspects my invention is not limited to high pressure boilers, water tube boilers, or to locomotives.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the known features of the construction illustrated comprise a boiler having a central top drum and two smaller drums 12.,l 12 at a somewhat lower level than the drum 10 and which form the upper longitudinal corners of a fire-box chamber 14. The chamber 14 is illustrated as having side walls formed of two sets of water tubes 16, 16 and 18, 18, the upper ends of which connect into the drums 12, 12 and the lower ends of which connect into a hollow foundation ring 20. it will be seen that the tubes 16 have their upper and lower ends on the same side of the longitudinal center of the chamber 14 while the tubes 18 bend sharply,` across the 1930. seriai No. 451,333.
top of the chamber 14 near the drums 12 and have their upperends on the opposite side of chamber lllfrom their lower ends. Water is supplied to the'foundation ring 20 by downcomers 22 running between the drums 12 and the ring on theoutsides of tubes 16 and-18 60 and also by circulators 24, 24C between the lower corner drums 26, 26 of the boiler and the transverse forward section 20a of the ring 20. Thev lire chamber 14 will be understood to have a grate or burner below or at the level of the ring 20 and that the gases of combustion pass upwardly to chamber 14 through an aperture formedgby ring 20 and discharge from the Achamber' 14 at the forward end thereof above the transverse portion 20a. It is common to provide in hre-boxes of this type bafliing means to increase the length of the path of the gases in the ire-box, such baling means commonly comprising arch tubes supporting refractory blocks forming a baiiie. The battling means in accordance with my invention comprises a series of water tubes, the lower portions ofwhich are set close together and extend in a line across the forward end of the ireeboX, such tubes inclining rearwardly of the fire-box and bending upward and laterally of the fire chamber, but being of different lengths so that they connect into the longitudinal wall of the fire chamber at points spaced longitudinally of the fire-box whereby ample space is provided for the passage of the combustion gases throughA the upper ends of the tubes. As illustrated, my improved batile comprises tubes 28, 28 of the bifurcated type whose lower ends connect into the transverse foundation member 20a by means of throats 29 and which bifurcate a short distance above member 20a. The upper ends of the tubes 28, however, do not reunite, but the two tubes 28 rising from a given throat 29 at the level of the member 20a connect into a drum 12 at longitudinally spaced points. This arrangement has been of the fire-box.
adopted to provide a pathway of large cross section for the gases through the upper ends of tubes 28. In order to provide a passage of maximum area for the gases of combustion while also obtaining a long average path of travel of the gases within the fire-box, the following particular arrangement has been adopted:
The tubes 28 lying on each side of the center of the transverse member a are divide d into two groups. The tubes in the group nearest the side of the fire-box are numbered from 101 to 106 beginning with the tube nearest the side of the fire-box. The group of tubes adjacent the center of the cross member 20a is numbered from 107'to 112, respectively, beginning with the tube nearest the side of the lire-box. Each tube 101 is connected into the drum 12on its side of the chamber 14 at a more forward point than any other tube of its group. The tubes 102 to Y 106 inclusive are connected into the drum 12 on their side of the'fire chamber 14 at points along its length successively nearer the rear Y As appears in Fig. 2, tubes 101 to v106 inclusive are all bent laterally at their upper ends so as to connect into drum 12 along a given longitudinal element of the drum', the tubes of a group defining a warped surface whose trace on the drum 12 is parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the lireA chamber 12. As shown, outside tubes 101 and 102 bend iirst away from the sides of the firebox and then towards them. Tubes 107 to 112 inclusive are treated similarly to tubes 101 to 106, tubes 107 entering drum 12 substantially at the same distance from the rear. of the drum as tubes 101 but higher up on the drum, so that, as appears in Fig. 1, tubes 107 almost overlie tubes 101 when viewed from the center of the iire-box. Similarly, tubes 108 to 112 inclusive connect into drums 12 at substantially `the same distances from the ends of the drum as tubes 102 to"106 inclusive. However, as appears Vfrom Fig 2, tubes 1.07 to 112 inclusive connect into drums 12 along given longitudinal elements ofthe drums 12 parallel to but somewhat inside and above the ones along which tubes 101 to 106 connect with the drums so that the inner groups of tubes also define warped surfaces.
lVhile I have describedytubes 28 as being of the'bifurcated type, I do not limitV myself to this or to any other detail of the disclosure herein except insofar as such detail is clearly and positivelv included in one of the append ed claims. In particular, itwill be understood that tubes having reduced ends may be substituted for bifurcated tubes within the broader of the claims. Also tubes of constant size but staggered at their points of connection to the foundation ring may be used in place'of the bifurcated tubes 28. F urthermore, I do not limit myself to a baiiie extending entirely or continuously across the firebox, as I mayomit tubes at the side of the fire-box or at intermediate points in the baiiie as desired.
I claim:
1. The combination in a fire-box of longitudinal water-containing means in the upper portion of the fire-box, a transverse water containing member inthe lower portion of the {ire-box, water tubes arranged in groups transversely of the fire-box and having their lower ends connected into said member and having their lower portions set close together to form a baffle, the tubes of one group hav ing their upper portions spaced apart and connected into said means alonglines parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the lirebox and the tubes of another of said groups having their upper ends spaced apart and connected into said means along lines parallel to the lines along which said first mentioned groups are connected to said drums but at higher levels'thereon.-
2, The combination in a fire-box of a hollow foundation member, means forming a water space in the upper portion of the lirebox extending longitudinally thereof, water tubes connected into said member at their lower ends along a line transversely of the fire-boxV and having their lower portions'set close together to form a baiiie but having their upper portions spaced apart and bent to permit passage of gases therebetween said bailie forming tubes being arranged in groups, the tubes of the groups nearer the sides of the nre-box defining surfaces whose traces on the drums lie below and outside of the traces on the drums o the surfaces of the inner groups of'tubes.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 1 and in which the two groups of tubes comiect into the longitudinal water containing member within zones whose ends are substantially the same 'distances from an end of the box.
4. The combination in a irebox having a gas outlet at one end, of means forming a water space along the upper longitudinal corners of the irebox, a transverse water containing member forward ofthe lower portion of the fire-box, and water tubes connected into said member at their lower ends and inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the gas outlet of thefiire-box, said tubes having their lower portions close together to form a baiiie and havingtheir upper ends connected into said means at longitudinally spaced points whereby the upper portions of the tubes are separated to provide a passage-way for the gases tothe outlet, said water tubes being arranged in pairs, the tubes of each of said pairs having at their lower ends a common throat for connection into the transverse water containing' member and being separated at their upper ends.
