WATER-TUBE BOILER.

This invention relates to water-tube boilers of the multipass type and in which a preheating or. economizer section is arranged in rear of the main boiler section.
4 One object of the present invention is to provide an improved andl simplified arrangement of baiiies between the lower and upper banksor sets of tubes of the main boiler section, said battles extending through the central portion of the triangular space bounded by the lower, upper and rear banks or sets oftubes of the main boiler section. This arrangement of said battles affords a very valuable space for the location of a.
superheater above the lower set of tubes andI below the upper sections of said battles.
Another object of this invent-ionl is to simplify the supporting means yfor the' baies just mentioned, van additional series ,of water-tubes being provided for this purpose, said tubes extending through the central portion of the triangular space between the three banks of main boiler tubes and communicating at their lower ends with the mud drum of said main boiler section and at their upper ends with the front upper drum of the same section. The use of these baliesupporting tubes eliminates a'A considerable v amount of complicated bafiiing heretofore i incorporated in' boilers of this type; A further object of the invention is to provide for greater storage space for steam in the top drum of the preheating or economizer section of the boiler. This is accomplished by raising said` section so that its top drum is on a higher level than the top rear drum of the main'boiler section, .the water level being'thus lowered in said top Vdrum of the economizersection.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawing, which constitutesv a part'of thls specification, and then 'more' specifically defined in the claim at the en'd of the description. e
The drawing is a vertical section of a boiler constructed substantially in accordance with this invention, the section being taken transversely of the drums and in line with the .water-tubes running between them.
Thesetting of the boiler includes the front wall 1, rear wall 2, and roof 3, and in -said setting there is arranged the firebox 4 bounded at the rear by the bridge wall 5. 4The main boiler section includes a lower or mud drum 6 preferably seated on thel bridge wall along the rear edge thereof, a front water drum Y preferably mounted 1 against thc upper portion of the front wall 4under the roof 3 in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position from the drum 7 to the drum 8, while the rear bank or set of tubes 11 of said main boiler section extends substantially vertically between said drum 8 and the mud drum 6.

Through the central portion of this triangular space a row of additional water-tubes 13 is arranged, said tubes communicating at ltheir lower ends with the top of the mud drum 6 and at their upper ends with the rear wall of the front drum 7. Said tubes 13 are bent substantially midway of their length so as to define a triangular portion of the space 12 -be'low them andy above the lower bank of tubes 9. The portions of the tubes 13 below the bends therein extend upwardly from the mud.

Because of the inclined position of the tubes 13, said battle wall 14 will maintain its position against them by gravity and no additional fastening means for saidl wall isvrequired. It will be observed that said wall 14 partially incloses the lower portion of the triangular space 12 l ing upward from the fire-box' it first encomin the center of the main boiler sectionA` and that a superheater is arranged in said inclosed space just above the lower inclined tubes 9 and over the fire-box L1, the bent tubes .15 of said superheater extending substantially parallel to said`tubes 9, while the headers or druins 1G of the superheater are protected from the direct action of the fire by a baille 17 extending along the top of the bank ot' tubes '9 fromthe top of the mud drum to a point below the lower one of said headers 1G. The prehcatiug or economizer section of the boiler comprises a mud drum 18, a steam and water drum 19 arranged substantially in vertical a'linement therewith, and a bank or set of vertical water-tubes 20 extending between and communicating` with said drums in rear of the bank of tubes 11 of the 'main boiler section. Said economizer section is raised slightly above the level of the main boiler section so that the water line 21 in the drum 19, which is on the same level as the water line in the' drum 8, is located below A row of water-tubes 22 extends from the.
top of the mud drum 1S of the economizer section to the lower portion of the top drum 8 of the main boiler section. rllhe feed water for the boiler enters the drum 19 ria pipe 35 and passes down. through the tubes 2O to the mud drum 1S of the preheating section. From said drum 18 the water passes upward through t-he tubes 22 into the top drum 8 of the main boiler section, and from said drum S the water circulates through the severalbanks of tubes and drums of said main boiler section in the usual manner.
The gases or products of combustion passpass and circulate through the lower bank of water-tubes 9 of the main boiler section and immediately afterwardA act upon the bent of combustion circulate through the boiler as indicated by the arrows on the drawing.
Near the forwardl upper end of the baffle 11' there is anliipwardy extending ridge or wallQS which preferably forms a part of said battle and which directs the products of combustion upwardly so that they will encompass the upper bank of tubes 10 before passing rearwardly to the vertical bank of tubes 11. A battle 24 is suitably supported along thev rear row of the tubes 11 and eX- tzends fronif the bottom of the drum 8 to a point spaced above the top of the mud drum G. This baille Qt directs theproducts of combustion 'ina downward course around thc tubes 11 andin rear of the battle wall 14. A.' cross battle 2'? extends from the lower edge of the battle Q4 rearwardly to the tubes 2Q, so as to direct. the products of combustion across the lower portions thereof and ot' the tubes Q0 of the preheating section.
The chimney outlet 2S is preferably located in the upper portion ot the re'ar wall 2 of the boiler setting, butl may be placed in the roof at the rear of the drum 19 if desired. A baffle 30 is suitably supported Aagainst the rear row ofthe tubes 20 of the preheating section in front of the outlet 28, and a cross battle 3G extends from the lower edge ofsaid baille 30 to the base of said chimney outlet. The arrangement of said latter battles insures the circulation of the products of combustion among the tubes 20 and 22 throughout substantially their entire extent before escape can be found through said outlet 28.
The superheater is supplied with steam from the top of the drum 19 via pipe 29. The drums 8 and 19 are connected above theirwater lines by tubes 31 which place the 4steam spaces'i'n the upper portions of said.
