GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,191, dated September 25, 1888. Application filed February 2!), 1888. Serial No. 205,704. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, CARL SA'HLER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor,
residing at the city of Cologne-onthe-Rhine, in'the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fire-places for boilers, stoves, and furnaces.
The objeetof my invention is to dispense with the ordinary metal gratebars and to provide a grate which is durable, not apt to be destroyed by heat or clogged by slag and clinkers, and in'which the draft can be regulated very readily.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a horizontal boiler provided with my improved grate. Fig.
2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 isa vertical transverse section of a vertical boiler provided with myimprovodgrate. Fig. 4 isa vertical transverse section of astove provided with my improved grate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
In place of the usual metal gratebars l ilse plates covered with lire brick. As shown in Fig. .l, i provide two parallel plates, A, having upwardly-projccting flanges alongthesidc edges, and on said plates lapply the lire-brick J, which has its top beveled from the longit idinal central line toward the side edges. l'iEEiZWCCH and slightly abovctheplatcs A, l provide a bar, parallel with said plates and provided on its top with a covering, 1), of lire-brick, which is also beveled from the longt tudinal central line toward the side edges. The brickwork l i n which the boilerlfiis mounted, is cutaway at part of the length of the sides and atl thc front of the boiler, and said front part otrthe brickwork is supported by columns G. Angleirons it are secured to the edges of the brickwork, and between them and the lireljiriek 'llair-passages a are formed.
Air-passages 7) are formed between the oppositesides ol' the li rebriek i and the fire-brick I).
At the bridge-wall J the angle-iron. K is provided, between which and the fire-brick B an air-passage is formed, and at the bottom part of the front of the briok-work the angle-iron L is provided. Air-passages are thus formed entirely around the plates and bars supporting the lire, and through said air-passages the air can pass to the fire.
To permit of regulating the quantity of air passing to thelir'e, the plates A are made vertically adjustable in some suitable manner.
In Figs 1 and 2 the plates A are hinged at their inner ends to the bridge-wall J, and their front ends are supported by chains M, passed over pnlleysNand carrying a suitable counterweight, or said chains can doe connected with a winding device to raise the front ends of the plates A.
In Fig. 3 the circular plate A carries the fire-bricks l3, and an annular air-passage is formed between the bottom of the boilcrSand the rinrpartof the firebrick ii). The plate A is provided withv arms 0, that can engage notches in standards P, supporting the boiler S, thus permitting of raising or lowering 'the plate A.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the plate A is hinged to the bottom of the stove Q, and carries the lirebrick 13 in this case the firebriclc is provided with a \f-shaped annular groove near its rim-that is, the top of the lirebrick is inclined downward from the center toward a circular line a short distance from the rim and from said line upward toward the rim.
My improved lirebriek g ates do not burn out as rapidly as the ordinary gratobars, do not warp, do not become clogged by oinders or slags, and retain the pulverized or granulated fuel that usually drops between the bars of ordinary g atesj Having thusdoscribcd my invention, [claim as new and desire to secure by Letters atont- .l. The combination, with a boiler, furnace,
or stove, of a plate below the same anda covcring o'l' lire-brick on said plate, the surface of said lire-lniclebeing a short distance from the walls or support of the stove or boiler, whereby aivpussnges are formed between said lire-brie covering and the wells or support of thestove or boiler, snbslzmtially as herein shown and described,
2 The eoinbiimtion, with aboiler, stove, or fire-plaice, of a bin extending longitudinally 'nndei' l-ho boiler, a firebi'ieii covering upon said bar, and two vertically-adjustable plates below the SDEICQS between the iii'e'briel; covering on the bar and the walls of the boilersnpporlgand fire-brick covering; on said plates, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a, fire-box; of a plate slightly larger than said firebox nnal luliow the bottom 34. 2. 1 oi" the same, and wlneh plate is capable oi adjustment toward or .ii-ozn CARL SAHL'ER. Vitnirsses:
