Abstract
405,839. Gaseous-fuel furnaces. ULETT, C. W., 44, Church Road, Newport, Monmouthshire. April 24, 1933, No. 11871. [Class 51 (i).] Gas-fired apparatus for heating steam boilers or water heaters comprises a perforated metal tube a which may be lined externally with refractory material b supplied with a mixture of air and gas which issues from perforations or nozzles e, d and is ignited so as to heat to incandescence a tubular porous diaphragm i. By regulating the supply of the mixture it is caused to burn without flame on the incandescent porous diaphragm and heat is radiated from its outer surface to the boiler tube l while products of combustion pass through the diaphragm and also heat the tube l by convection. An ignition opening m is provided in a closure plate at the end of the tube and spacing members g, j are provided between the tube a, diaphragm i and boiler tube l. According to a modification the tube a, tubular diaphragm i and tube l may be octagonal in cross-section and in a further modification the mixture is supplied to an annular space between two perforated tubes from which it is projected against porous diaphragms for heating a centrally arranged water tube and an outer boiler tube.
