Abstract
952,404. Fuel feeding. I. J. STETKA. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 2812/62. Heading F4B. Apparatus for burning solid fuel containing a large proportion of fines and dust is provided with a means for subjecting the fuel, as it is fed to the furnace, to a current of primary air which separates the fines and dust and carries them to a separate combustion chamber, or to a separate zone of the same combustion chamber in which the remaining larger pieces of fuel are burned. The fuel 1 is fed from a storage hopper 2 to a nozzle 5 by a worm conveyer 3 driven by a motor 4, and is spread upon the upper forward end of a rearwardly inclined furnace grate 6. Primary air from a fan 8 blows rearwardly through nozzles 7 provided in the grate, so separating the fines and dust and carrying them over a bridge 9 to a rear combustion zone 10, where they impinge a refractory wall 11. The larger pieces of fuel are retained on the grate 6 by the bridge 9, and any ash from the fuel bed so formed accumulates at 13. A refractory arch 14 and an air passage 15 assist combustion in zone 12. Combustion gases from zones 10 and 12 pass through a heat-exchanger 16 before being discharged.
