Abstract

858,107. Pulverulent fuel furnaces. COMPAGNIE DES METAUX D'OVERPELT-LOMMEL ET DE CORPHALIE. Nov. 4, 1958, No. 35402/58. Class 51 (1). Particulate fuel of low calorific value, such as colliery washings, is partially burnt in an upper fluidized bed 21, and measured amounts of material are delivered to a lower fluidized bed 10<SP>1</SP> by a pocketed drum 5. The material in the separate pockets are protected from the hot gases rising from the lower bed and are not agitated, so that fusion of the ash and clogging of the bed is prevented. The upper bed may be divided by a partition, Figs. 2 and 2a (not shown), material being fed into one side of the partition and passing through openings in the lower part of the partition to the discharge drum. The lower bed 10<SP>1</SP> may be of less area than the upper bed 21, Fig. 4, and ashes discharged through a slot extending the length of the lower bed are cooled by passing down a column with louvred walls 14 through which the air passes to mix with the gases rising from the lower bed 101 and provide the air for the upper bed. As shown the air passes through the descending column of ashes twice in different directions. The ash from the cooler falls on to a plate 15 whence it is discharged with the same speed from the full length of the cooler by a number of reciprocating chains 16 or scrapers.
