Abstract
748,981. Refuse-consuming furnaces. MARTIN, J. Dec. 30, 1953 [Jan. 10, 1953], No. 36112/53. Class 51(1). In a refuse-consuming furnace in which refuse is fed from a shoot 1 by a feeder 2 over an upwardly inclined ledge 30 on to an inclined grate 11, the latter consists of bars which are reciprocated in a direction towards the incoming refuse and a refractory arch 12 which extends over the rear part of the grate merges into a rearwardly inclined wall 34 forming, with the front wall of the furnace, a combustion .chamber having a throat 13 and an enlarged upper part 28. By the provision of a grid 7 and an exhaust pipe 8 combustion gases are drawn through the refuse on the ledge 30 and inthe lower part of the shoot 1, the pipe 8 being connected to the suction pipe 15 of a fan which supplies the withdrawn gases mixed with secondary air to nozzles 29 delivering into the combustion chamber 28. Secondary air is also supplied through nozzles 32 disposed below the arch 12. The space below the grate 11 is divided into compartments 21 each supplied with air heated in the heaters 14, the quantity passing to each compartment being individually controlled either manually or automatically. The ashpit 9 is fitted with a rotary discharge roller 23 and with crushing rolls 24, the crushed clinker falling into a water trough 25 from which it is discharged by an ejector 26.
