Abstract

647,051. Steam generator &c. furnaces or gas producers. DALIN, D. Nov. 20, 1944, No. 23070. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1943. [Classes 51(i) and 55(i)] All kinds of solid fuels and particularly oleaginous shale, refuse and garbage are burnt or gasified in a vertical shaft comprising walls composed of cooling tubes spaced apart to admit air for combustion and the escape of gases which may be burnt immediately for steam generation or led away for use in other apparatus. The fuel to be burnt or gasified is fed by a hopper 1 to the upper part 4 of a vertical shaft 5 having vertical walls formed of tubes 16 for the circulation of steam or water. The fuel is burnt in the shaft by air admitted at 20 and passed between the tubes 16 through the ashes at the lower part of the. shaft where it is heated to a distributing chamber 21 from which it passes under the control of dampers 22 between the front wall tubes for combustion of the fuel the gases from which pass through the spaces between the tubes of the other wall to a chamber 15 and thence through the fuel in the upper part 4 of the shaft for heating or drying purposes to a chamber 14 where they may be burnt with the addition of air admitted at 28 and serve for heating a boiler 24 or be led away for use in other apparatus. Combustion products, steam or nitrogen, may be admitted at 25 to he chamber 21 to control the combustion in the shaft. The fuel entering the hopper 1 is exposed to heat from the combustion of gases from the fuel burnt by the addition of air entering through openings 8, 9. The heat radiated from the chamber 7 to the fuel at 2 may be controlled by a movable shutter 11 formed of tubes for water or steam. A similar shutter is installed in the outlet 13 leading to the chamber 14. The wall tubes 16 have flanges welded to them to restrict the passage of air and gases and prevent the passage of fuel between the tubes. When treating oleaginous shale the part 4 of the shaft may be closed to the gases from the chamber 15 so that it forms a distillation chamber from which the distilled gases may be separately withdrawn. Specification 647,119 is referred to.
