Abstract

521,021. Refuse-consuming furnaces. WATSON, G. June 26, 1939, No. 32625/38. [Class 51 (i)] A tunnel furnace for consuming refuse comprises a series of transportable grates C with power driven rocking bars B which may be of the kind described in Specification 502,263. The grates enter the furnace at one end where. they are charged through an opening A and are moved forward to beneath the boiler E where they remain during combustion of the refuse. The grates are Subsequently moved into a chamber F where the clinker is cooled by .air supplied by a fan M, the preheated air being delivered by a conduit L to the furnace ashpit which contains trucks R for receiving ashes. The grates C are moved forward by an endless cable H. provided with clamps J which engage the bars. The cable H may also be reciprocated to shake the bars. The gases from the tunnel may be diverted from the boiler by a bye-pass flue N by the use of suitable dampers.
